History

Its evidence goes back to medieval times, runs through the entire Renaissance, the Baroque period and the Napoleonic era... up until now.

Palazzo Juvalta origins date back to the late Middle Ages, as proven by what is left of its fortified foundations as well as by its cellars carved into the rock.

In the 16th century the Guicciardi family, strongly bonded to the Besta family, undertook a radical transformation of their premises.

The Palazzo was raised by two floors. Distinguished architects and artists from the Luini and Fermo Stella schools were commissioned to decorate it.

Inside evidence of this period is witnessed by the decorations on the ceilings as well as by coats of arms and by some paintings which have recently come to light.

Of unusual interest are the so-called “graffiti” drawn on the house walls by passing soldiers around the 16th century.

At the beginning of the 18th century the house became the seat of the Juvalta family from the Swiss Canton of the Grisons. They ruled Valtellina and made it their centre for the cultivation of native vines and their resulting fine wines.

The change in aesthetic taste led to a partial rearrangement of the rooms and to the reinterpretation of the wall decorations, without however spoiling the Renaissance setting of the complex.

In the first decade of the 20th its heirs carried out a careful restoration, bringing their house back to its ancient splendor.

The new owners have trasformed it into a unique place worth a visit to those capable of appreciating its pleasant atmosphere amongst unparalleled nature and landscapes.
